SICKALPS 2020
After the first iteration in 2019, the number of cars participating in the 2020 SickAlps road trip and pass tour more than doubled to 24 Porsche 911 gathering at the foot of the Großglockner. The trip was set out to be a 2 day event driving some of Austria’s and Northern Italy’s finest pieces of road together with other same minded enthusiasts of the 911 and the Porsche brand.
The Friday morning early bird tour kicked off a weekend of passionate driving and memorable spirit amongst the group which consisted of all different kinds of people, brought together and united by the common ground that the Porsche 911 creates like almost no other car.
Driving day 1, which included the beautiful Nockalmstraße, entirely took part in the Austrian Alps, while the group was headed into South Tyrol to drive the Passo di Giau and Passo di Falzarego on Saturday.
Taking part myself in a 1971 911T with less power than many of the other participants, it was all about stretching out 2nd gear and speed through the turns to keep up with the faster G-series cars and 964s on the couple of free runs we had. The then newly fitted Bilstein dampers and anti-roll bars gave the car upgraded body control, really enhanced the overall driving experience and made the car a perfect well rounded package for the tour.
Over the course of all 4 days none of the 24 cars broke down or had any mechanical issues.
Road trips like the SickAlps tour emphasise that there is no way to extract more enjoyment and engagement out of an old car, other than just using it and not worrying about it breaking down or losing value. And best in a group of other cars and cool people!
